James Gavin, entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order in 1957, ordained to priesthood in 1965. In addition to his philosophy and theology studies, Fr. James holds a Graduate Degree in Religious Education and Pastoral Spirituality. He began his pastoral ministry as a missionary in Japan then moved to Guam where he served over nineteen years. Upon return to the United States, he served as a hospital chaplain, parochial vicar, social justice friar, retreat-parish mission director. He is well known for his ministry at St. John the Baptist on 31st Street in Manhattan, both as a confessor and minister of the food and clothing apostolate. As Senior friar, he ministered to the Brooklyn postulant fraternity for three years and presently resides as senior friar at Good Shepherd Friary in Manhattan. He has a marvelous gift of being able to pull the practical and the sublime out of the Gospels. His preaching on various Gospel themes has won him acclaim as a special events preacher, retreat director for clergy & religious, and a presenter at seminars on spiritual life.

The Retreat and Conference Center at Bon Secours hosts occasional concerts and musical celebrations by invited artists, choirs and other musicians, using our renovated chapel and organ. Guests and the general public are welcome.
