Balm in Gilead: Stories to Heal Body, Spirit and the Wounds of a Suffering World
The evangelists found in Jesus the answer to Jeremiah’s lament—“Is there no balm in Gilead…no physician…no healing for the wound of my people?” (Jer 8:22) “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching…and healing every disease and sickness.” (Mt 9:35) We too lament when faced with illness. We turn to Jesus with prayers of petition for healing, for others, for ourselves. But might we consider that in the call to be a disciple, to imitate Jesus, we are given the capacity to be healers. Through Gospel stories of Jesus’ healing ministry, we will explore the mystery of healing that occurs through Jesus’ words and rituals, through his seeing and touching, and through reflection on his question, “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mk 10:51) Guided by Fr. Phil Cover and Rev. Cindy Maybeck.
