The Concert:

We are so happy to have acclaimed singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer back in concert at our Retreat and Conference Center Chapel. Her recordings have cut across secular and spiritual boundaries. Carrie has 17 nationally released albums on Available Light and Rounder Records, including The Point of Arrival, The Beautiful Not Yet, A Permeable Life, and Everything is Everywhere. Newcomer has also released two companion books of poetry and essays, A Permeable Life: Poems and Essays and The Beautiful Not Yet: Poems, Essays, & Lyrics. Newcomer’s first theatrical production, Betty’s Diner: The Musical, was performed at a sold out run at Purdue University in 2015 and is now available to interested theaters, universities, and spiritual communities. She has attracted a devoted following with her warm voice, exquisite melodies, and an irreverent yet spiritual view of the world. She has been described as “a soaring songstress” by Billboard, a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe and Rolling Stone wrote that she “asks all the right questions.” One of the definitive voices of the heartland and progressive spirituality, Carrie  has the ability for sharp observation of the world. Newcomer has attracted a devoted following with her warm voice, exquisite melodies, and an irreverent yet spiritual view of the world. Her songs are based in the ordinary, and infused with images from the natural world.

The Point of Arrival is an album about beginnings and endings, love and grief, being in process, miracles and possibility, and living in the kind of times that ask us to be better people than we ever thought we would need to be.

Carrie Newcomer has also had many artistic collaborations with notable authors such as Parker J. Palmer, Barbara Kingsolver, Jill Bolte Taylor, Philip Gulley, Scott Russell Sanders and Rabbi Sandy Sasso. To learn more about Newcomer, her music and writing, please visit www.CarrieNewcomer.com.

The Workshop:

“Hope is holding in creative tension all that is, with all that could and should be, and everyday taking some action to narrow the distance between the two.” ~Parker J. Palmer

In this mini retreat participants will explore maintaining hope and our ability to envision during times of individual and community challenge. We will look how the process of keeping things human size helps us to experience the work of compassion, love, justice and spiritual awakening through the lens of faithfulness. Participants will consider the things that have helped them maintain hope in the past as well as ponder if those things are still available to us, and if so how do we access them. In this retreat, Carrie will use music, poetry, reflective writing, small and large group discussion.
